Autumn

This cheesy baked mash made with nine ingredients (salt and pepper included) – was traditionally served around 31 October, when families gathered to mark Halloween with feasting, games and a little fortunetelling. As with many old Halloween customs, it comes with a dash of folklore – a ring or coin was sometimes hidden in the dish, with the person who found it said to have marriage or prosperity in their future. These days you can skip the hidden treasure (more likely to break a tooth than attract a marriage proposal!) and enjoy it alongside sausages, roast pork or a hearty autumnal stew
