by Rosie Cassels
Every week we round up the newest openings, menus and exciting news from the food world. This week it’s National Barbecue Week, a new Japanese rooftop hotspot in Leeds and 50% off mini burgers at Bite Me Burger Co.
National Barbecue Week
Get your tongs at the ready for National Barbecue Week! British barbecues deserve to be so much more than boring burgers in baps – the outdoor grill is (weather permitting) an excellent way of experimenting with cooking methods and world cuisine. We have plenty of barbecue recipes to keep you satisfied all week long, from Moroccan chicken flatbreads to Vietnamese lamb burgers, and mackerel with fennel and chilli. Veggies won’t miss out on the fun – rustle up our aubergine, pepper and halloumi kebabs and goats’ cheese caramelised onion hot dog recipes to see why. If you’re feeling inventive, why not have a go at homemade smoky barbecue sauce? Join us on Thursday 1 June between 12-2pm on our Twitter @Sainsburysmag to chat all things barbecue! Our Managing Food Editor Tamsin Burnett-Hall will be answering all your burning questions and sharing tips and recipes - don't forget to use the hashtag #SainsMagBBQ.
New opening: Issho
Sun-seekers in Leeds can start preparing for the launch of Issho, a brand new Japanese rooftop restaurant and bar, which opens its doors on 21 June in Victoria Gate. Diners can expect Asian-style sharing menus made up of the very best Yorkshire produce as well as a range of sake and Japanese-inspired cocktails in the restaurant’s bar, Kori. We can hardly wait to sip on matcha sours and tuck into prawn and salmon gyoza, maple glazed pork belly and Wagyu pastrami on the sun-soaked terrace.
New menu: summer cocktails at OSLO
If you’re hankering after a new hangout for post-work drinks this summer in London, look no further than hip scandi-haven OSLO in Hackney. The bar has revealed a new creative cocktail menu featuring a selection of refreshingly zesty concoctions, perfect for cooling down after a long day. Now the warmer weather has arrived, OSLO’s outdoor terrace is the perfect place to soak up a wild peach margarita or Icelandic martini with pink grapefruit liqueur and camomile syrup. We can’t get enough of Aperol spritzes at the moment, and the ‘OSLO Spritz’ – an invigorating mix of Aperol, elderflower liqueur, rhubarb bitters, orange bitters and Prosecco – is not one to be missed.
Pop Brixton’s birthday
Pop Brixton turns two this week, and having helped 200 independent local businesses flourish as start-ups in the past 24 months, there’s certainly a lot to celebrate! From 2-4 June, Pop will be putting on a three-day party packed full of live music, party games and a mouth-watering selection of street food and drink. The Sunday looks set to pop with a birthday brunch from Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen and screening of White Men Can’t Jump from Block Party Cinema.
