News feed: World Gin Day, brunch at Brindisa and our brand-new June issue

by Rosie Cassels

Every week, we round up the newest openings, menus and exciting news from the food world. This week, it’s World Gin Day, brunch at Brindisa and our brand-new June issue.

In season

June marks the beginning of British strawberry season, and finally we can get stuck into recipes featuring the nation’s favourite summer fruit. Instead of drowning your strawberries in cream, why not enjoy the classic combo in the form of strawberry and cream scones instead? Incorporate them into teatime treats like this strawberry and elderflower cake or strawberry Bakewell scones. If you’re after a new drink recipe, switch your Pimm’s pitcher for a borage flower and strawberry punch, or try our super simple homemade strawberry jam on toast.

New issue: June

Don’t forget to pick up a copy of our brand-new June issue, which will be lining the shelves of Sainsbury’s supermarkets from Wednesday. Packed with summery cooking inspiration, including six fun new salad dressings, recipes for a Middle Eastern-inspired pitta party and five fabulous veggie dishes from The Hairy Bikers, it’s not one to miss.

Beyond Bread

Coeliacs in the capital will need no introduction to Beyond Bread, but for the uninitiated, BB is a two-strong bakery where everything under the roof is gluten free. After specialising in breads, cakes and pastries for several years, Beyond Bread is doing just as its name suggests and opening the Islington branch for evening service, complete with pizzas, sharing platters, sliders and the best cheese straws we've ever eaten. You can tuck in until 9pm Thursday to Saturday and until 8pm on Sundays. Coeliacs, assemble.

Brunch at Brindisa

If avocado toast has lost its charm, then the new weekend rice brunch at Brindisa Shoreditch may be for you. The tapas hotspot has long been the home of authentic Spanish food in London, and now the hungry hordes can opt for Arroces – a big pan of Spanish bomba rice designed for two to share – from 12 noon on weekends. We can’t get enough of the Arroz Negro – an eye-catching dish of black bomba rice, squid, mussels and aioli, which is even better washed down with a sherry spritz.

World Gin Day

Just in case you are looking for an excuse to drink gin this weekend, Saturday 10 June is World Gin Day. For a refreshing citrus cocktail, shake up a lemon gin fizz, or proof that gin can be even better in edible form - this gin and tonic lemon drizzle cake. While we strongly believe that you need look no further than our recipe for The Perfect Gin and Tonic, look out for three inventive G&T twists in our new June issue.
