What we’ve been eating this month
by Sarah Alcock
Working on a food magazine is hard work, but at least we never go hungry. Here's a sneak peak into our favourite munchies we've eaten recently – read on to find out what the lucky team have been chomping down on!
Hannah Sherwood, digital content producer
'I shared the 'Full Elvis' at Duck & Waffle with my family. It's a Belgian waffle smothered in peanut butter and jam, topped with banana brulée, berries and chantilly cream. We had this after a round of house breakfasts... Excessive but SO good!'
Georgie Walton, marketing manager
'I had the best meal at Jimmy's Popup in Clapham. To start we had a crispy oyster with pickled Asian vegetables and smoked paprika mayo. Next came sharing boards of whipped smoked cod's roe with crispy chicken skin, along with grilled mackerel and mackerel pâté, all served with pitta bread. For the main course, mountains of côte de boeuf and lobster tails were brought out. We ended the night with a lovely raspberry Bakewell tart and lemon ice cream sandwiches. The ice cream was like eating thick clotted cream (and I don't even like ice cream!) and has my mouth watering even now.'
Helena Lang, editor-in-chief
'The best dish I have eaten this month is a monster slice of custard-soaked brioche pudding with baked plums and clotted cream. This was cooked by Duck & Waffle executive chef Dan Doherty at the launch of his new cookbook Toast Hash Roast Mash: Real Food For Every Time Of Day (Octopus Books, £20). Crispy on the outside, fluffy and soft within, it's the perfect brunch recipe.'
Sarah Alcock, digital content and social media editor
'I had an incredible layered Mexican dip cooked by my friend's aunt June at a hen do. Why I have never thought of doing this before, I don't know! It was a layer of refried beans, then guacamole, salsa, sour cream and cheese. Dip your nachos in and get the whole lot in one mouthful. It was a Mexican party in my mouth.'
Michelle Dickson, deputy editor
'I loved this tender harissa spiced lamb loin with freekeh, aubergine, apricot and tzatziki at Boulud Sud pop-up, Bar Boulud at the Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park.'
Frankie Cary, senior sub-editor
'I made a cake in the shape of a Poké Ball for my brother's 21st birthday. He's obsessed with the mobile phone game Pokémon Go and so I thought I'd give it a whirl! It was my first time using fondant icing and although I had a few cracks and lumpy bits, I was surprised with how well it turned out. Underneath all the red and white was a delicious lemon drizzle layer cake, http://www.sainsburysmagazine.co.uk/recipes/baking/item/lemon-drizzle-layer-cake. It went down a treat.'
Leah Hyslop, food director
'When it comes to great steak, you usually think of the US or Japan – but I had the best steak of my life in Restaurant Atelier in the pretty city of Gothenburg, Sweden. Sourced from a nearby farm, and served with tomatoes, ox marrow and truffle, it was unforgettable.'
Charlotte Davidson, editorial assistant
'My sloppy Joe hot dog from Bubbledogs was insanely delicious along with incredibly moreish togarashi tots and horny devils. All washed down with a lovely glass of Vilmart & Cie, Grande Réserve; a match made in heaven. Look out for our full review, coming soon!'
