Food writer Ashleigh Arnott visited this rejuvenating getaway in the Northumberland countryside with her husband, whose parents live in the area. The luxurious cabins gave them a refreshing view of the history-rich Scottish Borders as well as a base for exploring the Northumberland coast’s quaint towns and beaches. The rejuvenating effects of their stay are considerable; who needs meditation when you can indulge in natural tranquillity but also underfloor heating, homemade sourdough, and an outdoor jacuzzi bubble bath?

Where is it?

Tiptoe Retreat sits on a family-run farm in rural Northumberland, a short drive from Lindisfarne and Berwick-upon-Tweed.

What’s the accommodation like?

The two-berth cabins are luxurious in every aspect, from the simple things – plush pillows and smart TVs – to the special extras. Enjoy the views from the mirrored sauna pod and take an outdoor jacuzzi bath overlooking the Scottish borders.

What did you eat and drink?

On-site baker and therapist Pauline Beaumont’s bread was a reassuring backbone to our in-cabin eats, while the restaurant at local attraction Ad Gefrin provided a locally sourced meal in elegant surrounds.

What is there to do?

Take in the unspoilt countryside with a walk along the River Till, level up your strength with a Pilates class or remind yourself of the pleasures of baking with a bread-making lesson.

What do I need to pack?

The only thing we missed from the kitchen were herbal teas, but remember that you’re a reasonable drive from any supermarkets so best to bring any drinks, treats and condiments you think you might crave during your stay.

Lasting memory

The quiet and darkness that the remote location provided made for a ridiculously good night’s sleep.

Sainsbury’s magazine insider tip

Make the most of the excellent self-catering set-up and pre-plan your meals, that way you won’t need to leave the site beyond exploring local landmarks.
