Swap lying by the pool for working up a sweat says Amanda Statham, travel editor of Women’s Health magazine.

From improving your tennis swing in Spain to learning to horse ride in Arizona, active breaks have never been more popular. According to a survey by Neilson Beach Clubs, more than a third of Brits would prefer an activity holiday over simply sitting back and doing nothing. Top of the trend are ‘sportcations’ – trips to learn or practise a new sport, and ‘holisti-days’ – holistic trips designed to improve mental health and help us disconnect from devices. So switch off with these breaks that combine sun, fun and fitness.

1. Saddle up in Arizona

1. Saddle up in Arizona

Riding holidays are on the rise, from equestrian therapy in Indonesia to pony trekking in Wales, however an authentic ranch holiday in Elgin, Arizona is the ultimate hot-to-trot escape. Picture yourself riding along sun-scorched mountain passes and canyon trails, making your base in a cosy log cabin at rustic Double R Ranch – where you can also channel your inner cowboy/girl with lassoing and campfires beneath star-studded skies.

How to book

Five-night ranch holidays start from £1,150pp, including accommodation, meals and daily treks at Double R Ranch. Visit doublerguestranch.com.

2. Practise yoga in Greece

Create your own yoga retreat at fitness-focused Sani Club in Halkidiki, where a variety of lessons are free and on tap, including themed classes and even family yoga sessions. Start your day sitting cross-legged on a hilltop gazing down at the white-sand Ammos beach, have a go at paddleboard yoga at midday, or close your practice with guided sunset yoga overlooking the Mediterranean ocean. A sanctuary of wellbeing, there’s also the chance to indulge in Ayurveda treatments, such as Shirodhara, in the Club Spa and plenty of other complementary classes to try, such as pilates, breathwork, mindfulness and meditation.

How to book

Double rooms on a half-board basis (for two adults and one child) at the Sani Club start from £334. Visit sani-resort.com.

3. Go sea swimming in Italy

If you’re looking to improve your open-water swimming, overcome a fear of the big blue, or simply hang out with a fun group of like-minded swimmers, SwimTrek’s six-night escape to Italy’s Tremiti Islands could be the active holiday for you. Expert guides lead you on daily 3-4-kilometre swims in the azure Adriatic, beneath limestone bluffs and through caves. Back on land, shower off the salt and sand at Hotel La Vela, which is surrounded by peaceful pine forest.

4. Hike a pilgrim route in Portugal

4. Hike a pilgrim route in Portugal

Walking the last 178-kilometre leg of the world famous Santiago pilgrim route along the Portuguese Atlantic coast is a bucket-list break for many. Travel in style with Macs Adventure, who take the weight off (literally) by arranging for your luggage to be delivered ahead to your cosy accommodation each day. After kicking off in Unesco heritage city Porto, you’ll meander through seaside towns, fishing villages and deserted sandy beaches. Image: Getty Images

How to book

The 14-night Camino Portuguese Coastal Way tour starts from £1,399pp, including accommodation. To book, visit macsadventure.com.

5. Enjoy golf in Mauritius

Designed by golf champion Bernhard Langer, 18-hole Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club is the most spectacular course in the Indian Ocean. Set on its own private 38-hectare island off the east coast of Mauritius, it’s reachable only by a golf shuttle-boat via a private jetty or helicopter. A round here takes in rocky outcrops, lakes, jaw-dropping views of the ocean and tropical flora and fauna, and there’s an academy where you can brush up on your swing with the help of the pros. Don’t forget your swimsuit, however, because golfers also get access to La Flibuste, a private beach with sunloungers and butler service. Make your base Long Beach Mauritius, where guests benefit from free green fees at the golf club. Image: Jacob Sjoman

How to book

Seven nights at Long Beach Mauritius starts from £1,912pp, including flights with Tui. Visit tui.co.uk.
