How to make your own Christmas cards and wrap
by Christine Faughlin
When it comes to gifting, nothing beats the personal touch. If you've gone to the trouble of making an edible gift for someone you love, it deserves to be wrapped in something equally special. Try your hand at easy gifting projects that anyone can make – even you!
Washi tape Christmas cards
Make your own cards with this simple, effective design.
1 Draw a wide triangular shape with a ruler in faint pencil on the front of a blank card (blank cards and envelope sets are available at craft shops and online at hobbycraft.co.uk; or try eco-craft.co.uk for a recycled version like ours).
2 Using an assortment of coloured washi tape (available from high street craft and stationery shops), fill in the shape of the triangle to create your Christmas tree design. Criss-cross with other colours to create a washi tape tinsel or fairy light effect.
3 Use an eraser to rub out any visible pencil lines, and add a gold star sticker to the top of the tree.
TIP: This idea also works for gift tags; find blank tags at hobbycraft.co.uk.
Potato print wrap and tags
Transform plain paper and tags with potato prints.
1 Decide on your design. Choose a potato that fits the size, then cut it in half lengthways. Dry the cut surface with kitchen paper, then draw your design on with felt pen.
2 Using a scalpel (or very sharp knife), cut around the outline; children will need the help of an adult. Start by cutting around the outer edge of your design, to a depth of about 1cm. Next, cut radial lines from the outside edge of the design to the outer edge of the potato, at small intervals, so you can remove the unwanted potato, leaving just the raised design – we cut horizontal stripes out of the body of a Christmas tree shape to add interest.
3 For a crisp imprint, brush a thin layer of acrylic paint onto the raised surface of the design – don’t be tempted to dip the potato into the paint, as this will always give a messy print. Stamp onto plain wrapping paper or tags, allow to dry then dot on red ‘baubles’ using the rubber end of a pencil.
TIP: This technique can also be used for gift bags, and to make Christmas cards.
Fold flat festive forest Christmas cards
Create a collection of colourful Christmas trees to send to your nearest and dearest.
1 To make a forest of 3D trees to decorate your Christmas table or a windowsill or mantelpiece, simply download our exclusive tree template and print it out on sturdy card. Cut out the shape to make a template, which you can then trace around to transfer your design on to the coloured card of your choice. You will need two of the same size to create each tree.
2 Draw a faint pencil line down the centre of each tree shape and mark the mid point. On one tree, cut from the top down to the middle point; on the other, cut from the bottom up to the mid point. Then simply slot the two pieces together. Send flat-packed in the post for the recipient to assemble themselves.
