Taking Orders: Farang, London

Farang

We tuck into the winter menu at this popular North London local.

Where is it?

Nestled in-between Finsbury Park and Highbury and Islington stations, it’s an ‘in the know’ North London gem. You'll soon get over the steep walk towards the end of Blackstock Road, Farang acting as a mouth-watering beacon.

What’s all the fuss about?

A much-loved Thai local, regular patrons will now get to enjoy the current winter feast menu, crafted by chef-owner Sebby Holmes.

What is the place like?

Brick walls, an abundance of plants and simple wood and terracotta furnishings are simple yet homely and let the food do the talking – which it does, loudly.

What did you eat and drink?

I was invited to try the group winter tasting menu, which for £65 per head (£90 with a wine pairing) was pleasingly abundant. Of note were the prawn crackers with nahm prik ong relish, a mix of minced pork, tomato and chilli relish. Think spag-bol-style ragu but with a fresh and spicy Thai kick – fitting given that the space used to be an Italian taverna. The smoked mackerel miang bites were a flavour bomb. Sour fruits, peanut, ginger and lime make up the aromatically assembled centre of an edible betel leaf that you’re encouraged to gobble down in just one bite.

Mains included a whole crispy sea bass, dressed with coconut chilli jam, ginger, crispy shallots and roasted rice. Everything worked, balancing the classic sweet, sour, salty and spicy flavours of Thai cuisine, even better when wrapped up in a crisp and flaky roti, brushed with a roast garlic and turmeric butter. To wash it all down, I enjoyed a drink (or two) of the mandarin negroni, a classic with a homemade mandarin syrup twist.

The verdict

Farang is only open Wednesday to Saturday as they source all the fresh produce directly from Bangkok, showing the commitment to creating a fresh and authentic Thai experience. Ideal for group hangs and cosy catch ups, you won’t go wrong warming up your winter here.
