News feed: National Éclair Day, beetroot and the Jam Tree Rum Festival

by Rosie Cassels

Every week, we round up the newest openings, menus and exciting news from the food world. This week, it’s National Éclair Day, beetroot and the Jam Tree Rum Festival.

Beetroot

Sweet, earthy beetroot is in season in June. Don’t restrict this brightly coloured root to your summer salads – the soft and juicy vegetable can transform all sorts of recipes, from soups to cocktails (yes, really). This beetroot, goats’ cheese and hazelnut tart is perfect for an alfresco meal, while this easy beetroot jam is guaranteed to be your new go-to condiment. It might sound like a surprising match, but the beetroot in these brownies makes them extra dense and fudgy.

National Éclair Day

Thursday is National Éclair Day – the ideal opportunity to host a summer tea party and show off your choux skills. These dainty raspberry white chocolate éclairs make a stunning table centrepiece, or for a fun twist on a classic, try a batch of Jo Wheatley’s toffee popcorn éclairs. If pastry prep isn’t for you, head to Melba at the Savoy on London’s Strand to taste an Icéclair – light choux pastry filled with handmade ice cream and chocolate, raspberry or caramel sauce, with a chocolate glaze and a range of toppings.

Jam Tree Rum Festival

Running for the whole of July, The Jam Tree group of London bars and restaurants will be celebrating summer with a brand-new Rum Festival. The free festival will be host to a range of rum-derful events, from tastings with industry experts to cocktail classes and a boozy summer barbecue menu. Head to the Clapham and Chelsea venues for a taste of the sunshine and some Caribbean vibes.

Opera Tavern

Opera Tavern in London’s Covent Garden is the perfect spot for pre- or post-theatre fodder. Serving Italian- and Spanish-influenced small plates, we recommend the tender grilled bavette with meaty oyster mushrooms, Jersey Royal potatoes and salsa verde. The chargrilled octopus with romesco is also very good. If it’s a hot day, ask to sit outside and enjoy people-watching while sipping on wine from its extensive list.

Bite Me Burger Co

A mouthwatering mini-burger pop-up is now open in Holborn, London. Bite Me Burger Co will be ‘making the world a burger place’ with its bite-sized treats, available in boxes of up to a dozen. We’re itching to try the duck burger with truffle mayo, smoked hoisin and Swiss cheese.
