Staycation: Tarporley, Cheshire
The entrance to The Hollies accommodation and farm shop

Joely Carey took a foodie road trip north in search of castles and cute cafes.

Where is it?

Part of The Hollies Retreats, STAY on the High Street is located in the historic village of Tarporley in Cheshire, nestled among independent shops, bars and boutiques.

What’s the accommodation like?

There are five contemporary en-suite rooms in a converted farmhouse with luxe touches, each elegantly decorated with home-from-home touches.

What did you eat and drink?

Breakfast is served in the Hollies Farm shop downstairs – with exclusive access for STAY guests – offering a great selection of homemade cakes, savouries and coffees. We had a hearty breakfast and freshly roasted coffee. Try the tasty granola or the Belgian waffles if feeling indulgent. On the High Street, head to Ginger & Pickles’ Tarporley Tearoom. The cafe is dog-friendly and the decor inside is super cute – think Insta-ready everything! It does get busy, so do book ahead. The afternoon tea is a must, but the roasted vine tomatoes on sourdough with olive oil and sea salt was a winner, too. The sister bakery opposite is a feast for those on the go. The gluten-free florentines and mincemeat Bakewell tart are both to die for. Dinner at The Swan was a gorgeous evening, great wine accompanying a quality classic menu – the pie was outstanding!

What is there to do?

A perfect destination to mooch about, you can buy a new outfit, gorgeous bouquets, a designer watch, vintage French linen and some cool houseware if you’re feeling flash. Or put on your boots and hit the walking routes; there are circular trails from the villages for all abilities – with pub stops at either end. Visit Bonjour Wines on the High Street to try some excellent wines, nibble on a charcuterie board with some local cheese and chutney in the outdoor patio area, then buy a Havana cigar. For some me-time, book a day at Sanare Spa. Visit Beeston Castle for a history fix, or Peckforton Castle for an adrenaline-filled driving experience with Land Rover.

Lasting memory

Tasting the best pie of my life at dinner at The Swan – the chicken and mushroom pie has made it onto my foodie fame list!

Sainsbury’s magazine insider tip:

If the weather is great, book a takeaway afternoon tea or grazing board from Ginger & Pickles and head out on foot. You won’t regret it.
