Did you know that about 490,000 tonnes of milk is wasted in the UK every year? That’s enough to fill 190 Olympic swimming pools! To help stop the milk in your house going to waste, there are some simple steps you can follow. First, fresh and filtered milk should be kept in the fridge at all times – and only out for as short a time as possible when you’re using it. It should also always be chilled between 0-5°C, which will ensure it’s fresher for longer – so check the temperature in your fridge. And if you’re still struggling to use up the whole bottle in one go, here are some ideas to help you finish it all…

1. Use your freezer

Try freezing leftover milk in an ice-cube tray (as long as it’s within its ‘best before’ date). Make sure you leave enough room for the milk to expand in the tray as it freezes. Ahead of using, defrost the cubes in a bowl overnight in the fridge and then give the milk a shake before using – it’s best for baking and cooking.

Whether whole, semi-skimmed or skimmed, Sainsbury’s milk is sourced directly from a dedicated collective of over 100 British dairy farmers, who all follow specific cow welfare guidelines, and it has a mild, smooth taste.

2. Stack it up

Want something that’s quick, easy and delicious for dinner? Use your milk up! You can make a simple pancake batter by combining leftover milk with eggs and flour. Pair your pancakes with your favourite ingredients to make a tasty sweet or savoury stack.

Arla Cravendale milk can stay fresh for up to three weeks, giving you more time to use it up. It’s produced using ceramic filters, which remove naturally occurring impurities without the need for any additives.

3. Cheesy does it

Milk nearing its ‘best before’ date might not be what you want with tea or cereal, but if you have a lot leftover it can still be used to make your own homemade cheese. Paneer, cottage cheese and ricotta are a great place to start for beginner cheesemakers.
