Taking Orders: We try Gail's new summer menu
by Helena Lang
If you’re lucky enough to have a Gail’s bakery on your high street then you’ll already be a sucker for their sourdough, their granola and their seeded crackers, but did you know that they have just launched their summer menu? Helena Lang popped into her local branch to test it out.
Where is it?
There are now over 130 Gail’s bakery stores around the country with most in London and the South-East.
What's all the fuss about?
If you have a Gail’s bakery in your local area it means it’s ‘desirable’ and you can rub your hands together whilst house prices rise. Popular with yummy mummies, working-from-homers who like to spend hours on their laptops fuelled by coffee, ladies-who-lunchers and courting couples it offers a delicious, if premium priced, selection of baked goods including huge croissants, pretty patisserie, loaded loaf cakes and more.
What's the place like?
It’s all blond wood, white walls and cool customers. With the odd toddler thrown in.
What did you eat and drink?
My friend and I shared a Tomato and Courgette Summer Slice, a kind of veggie stuffed frittata, and a Sundried Tomato, Artichoke and Basil Quiche which had deliciously short, nutty wholemeal pastry and a super-savoury filling.
We cooled down with a pair of iced teas; The Darjeeling, Elderflower and Sage version came with fresh lemon and mint, whilst (my favourite) the Sparkling Hibiscus with Rhubarb and Orange was a delicious tumbler of fruity and fizzy refreshment.
We couldn’t resist a slice of the new moist, crumbly carrot cake topped with a dollop of mascarpone cream cheese icing and sprinkled with a crunchy hazelnut praline.
Your verdict?
A step-up from your regular corner café Gail’s is a great venue for a girly gossip, or a bit of alone time with a delicious baked treat or two.
Lasting memory
That quiche was the perfect umami rich savoury treat.
