SPONSORED: Tales of peat, salt and fire from Laphroaig

Laphroaig 10 is a single malt scotch that’s as bold and characterful as its hometown – one that’s a hit with connoisseurs and a great introduction for the whisky curious. It’s made on the coast of Islay, a remote island off the west coast of Scotland that has an unpredictable, and at times unforgiving, climate. But it’s this rugged landscape that has shaped the master distillery’s traditions for more than 200 years.

The area is famed for its peat, which for Laphroaig’s whisky is burned at unusually low temperatures to create a cold smoke to flavour the barley. Only a handful of distilleries in the world do this, and it’s a process that gives a distinctively earthy and medicinal punch to the final product. The peat kilns almost date back to the distillery itself in 1815, and as the grain is later dried over the same fires, the smoke adds the whisky’s signature smoky notes. Other flavours arrive from the sea – Laphroaig’s iconic warehouse looks out on to the restless Atlantic, which imbues the spirit with a hint of salt. The whisky is then sealed in ex-Bourbon barrels to age for 10 years, where it picks up its bold and full-bodied smokiness.
When the lids are lifted a decade later, it’s a sparkling gold whisky rich in character that’s unveiled. The scotch has a long and lingering finish, where a surprising sweetness breaks past the layers of salt and smoke – and it’s a taste that wins awards. Serve neat over ice, ideally in a fine crystal snifter if you want to enjoy the colour, aroma and full taste, or get adventurous with a cocktail for a different appreciation of those distinctive flavours. Try our smoky French martini, which makes the most of Laphroaig’s fire notes.
