Food

The Wellington Arms, Hampshire

by Sarah Randell

This time last year I spent a day with photographer Lisa Linder, and Simon Page and Jason King, owners of one of my favourite gastropubs, The Wellington Arms, in leafy Hampshire. We were shooting a feature for the July 2013 issue of Sainsbury's magazine.

I first stumbled across The Wellington Arms five or so years ago. We knocked on the door and asked to book a table for lunch to follow our planned walk through the surrounding meadows and lanes. 'Of course,' said Jason. 'Would you like to take the dogs with you?' We set off with two borrowed fluffy hounds into the countryside and returned an hour or so later to delicious smells and a table set in the garden.

Simon and Jason are as passionate about their garden (and their dogs) as they are about good food – think herbaceous borders brimming with English country flowers, a neatly planted veggie garden, fruit trees and views of Jason's hen houses and pigs in the distance. It's quite a picture.

Jason's cooking is inspired and full of flavour – some of my favourite recipes from The Wellington Arms menu are in our July issue. (See below for our exclusive offer...)

Check out Jason's recipe for elderflower cordial; the elderflowers are just daring to come into bloom now that the sun has appeared.

The menu changes depending on what's in season, but here's an idea...
