News Feed: National Tea Day, St George's Day and the relaunch of The Garage

by Rosie Cassels

Every week we round up the newest openings, menus and exciting news from the food world. This week it’s National Tea Day, St George’s Day and the relaunch of The Garage.

National Tea Day

This Friday is National Tea Day, a glorious excuse to celebrate the classic beverage beyond the traditional cuppa. Try using tea as an ingredient in savoury cooking, like this succulent tea-brined chicken, flavoured with Lapsang Suchong. The Savoy is famous for its afternoon teas, once enjoyed by Marilyn Monroe, and now you can also enjoy an Earl Grey-infused tipple at the hotel’s Beaufort Bar. The World Stage is a deliciously delicate mix of Bacardi, apricot, lime, cardamom and Earl Grey tea.

Tom’s Kitchen

Head to Tom’s Kitchen in Chelsea for a taste of the brasserie’s exclusive Cacklebean breakfast special. Cacklebean eggs, from Arlington White chickens in the heart of the Cotswolds, have exquisite amber yolks and a rich velvety texture. The breakfast, consisting of creamy savoury porridge with a poached Cacklebean egg, wild mushrooms and a bacon & black pudding crumble, is available Monday-Friday until the end of April.

St George’s Day

Sadly St George’s Day (23rd April) is no longer a public holiday, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take some time this week to celebrate the valour of England’s patron saint by rustling up some of our traditional dishes. From pies to scones and classic fish ‘n’ chips, browse our British recipe collection for inspiration.

El Bandito

Mezcal, a distilled Mexican spirit made from the agave plant, is fast making a name for itself on the UK drinks scene. Catch Liverpool-based spirit aficionados El Bandito at their new drinking den in the heart of Shoreditch, where you can enjoy an intimate cocktail experience from a menu of uncommon and exciting brands of mezcal and premium tequilas. Don’t miss the Kale Mezcalarita, an eye-catching combination of mezcal, kale juice, ginger, agave and lime.

The Garage

From the group behind Oslo in Hackney and Nottingham’s Rock City comes the re-launch of iconic music venue The Garage in Islington. As well as a refreshing revamp of the legendary club space, the venue reopens this week to include slick all-day café, cocktail bar and craft beer hub The General Store, as well as intimate gig venue Thousand Island which is set to host an exciting programme of late night socials.
